The thrill of driving a 911 was always the direct byproduct of the placement of its engine, and while Porsche proved that they could put an engine pretty much where they want and still make a car handle well, it was always their rear-engined model that received the most attention.
Over the years, the 911 has grown and grown up, and the biggest such change was really noticed in the transition from the 997 to the current 991.
The 991 is bigger and has electric power steering, which can even be found on the rear wheels too, on some models, to try to maintain the sharpness of the hydraulic system and help with turn in and maneuverability. Still, while the regular Carrera models will make up the bulk of sales, it’s actually the more focused versions, like the GT3 that will really set enthusiasts hearts/pants alight, as it should still, as Jeremy Clarkson put it, “want to kill you.”
EVO has done a video piece on it, which goes into great detail as to what the 991-based GT3 is all about, what are its main pros, cons and differences over the old model.
As usual, the conclusion is somewhat predictable, and the car is deemed hugely competent, but noticeably more sanitized than its predecessor. A McLaren MP4-12C and Nissan GT-R were used as comparisons in this test too – it’s posted after the jump, below.
