With the future of the Holden Commodore as a traditional rear-wheel drive sedan looking as bleak as the prospect of Australia keeping its automotive manufacturing industry intact over the next decade, the new Gen-F could be the last hurray for a country that grew up with muscle cars spanning from the Ford Falcon GTHO and Valiant Charger R/T of the 1970s to the HSV and FPV’s of the 21st century.
If Holden kills the Commodore, then it will certainly go down with its head up. The performance version of the series named the GTS from GM’s Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) division comes with a 577hp (585PS / 430kW) V8 breathing under its hood for a 0-100km/h (62mph) time of 4.4 seconds.
Besides being it’s most expensive model at AU$92,990 (US$84,900 / €63,400), Holden says the GTS is also Australia’s most powerful and fastest production car ever.
After driving it during a local media event, Australia’s Motoring site came out with an infographic that compares the Chevrolet SS’ muscled up cousin from down under with the wider-known BMW M5, Mercedes E63 AMG , Audi RS6, Cadillac CTS-V and the Jaguar XFR-S.
