We take many things we face in our daily lives for granted, both good and bad. We invariably accept that our daily existences follow certain set patterns, most of which revolve around some sort of vehicle, taking us somewhere and back, and in particular, the car.
However, if we were to take several steps back, not just one, and try to adopt as objective a view as possible, the only conclusion is that the situation has got out of hand – have we, perhaps, built our lives too much around the car, and does it dominate us too much?
I think those are the questions raised by this very interesting, and frankly kind of creepy, animated documentary from the year 1966, called “What on Earth!”. It adopts the perspective of visitors from Mars, which seem to have mastered traveling through our solar system, yet have some trouble understanding the nature of other life forms.
As they lay eyes on Earth, they understandably make the confusion that it’s the cars that are the dominant species, and not us, being regarded as unwanted parasites.
It’s the result of the combined creative effort of Les Drew and Kaj Pindal, and apparently an Oscar nominee, while serving as “an entertaining case study.” Check it out, after the jump.
