If not always, most of the times, BMW‘s mainstream concepts are nothing more than lightly disguised versions of the actual production cars that will soon adorn the Bavarian brand’s store floors. That holds true for the 4-Series Coupe, M4 Coupe and in this case, the X4 study as well.

There’s no hiding that the X4 is a shrunk-down version of the successful X6 that makes use of the same underpinnings, and for the most part, the engine range as the latest X3, with all aforementioned models plus the X5 produced at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in the USA.

North America should get BMW’s 2.0-liter inline-four and 3.0-liter straight-six turbocharged gasoline engines from launch, with Europe to feature a wider range, including a selection of diesels as well. An M performance version has been rumored, but not confirmed.

So how close are we to the reveal of the production X4? BMW didn’t mention the sporty crossover in the list of models being prepared for the Frankfurt Motor Show, so it may unwrap the car at another show – the Los Angeles and Detroit events in November 2013 and January 2014 are prime candidates.
