Toyota Presents New Corolla Hybrid Models in Japan [31 Photos]

The Japanese domestic market version of the 11th generation Corolla that was launched in March last year and which shouldn’t be confused with the new Corolla sedan released in Europe and North America this summer, has been enhanced with the addition of a hybrid variant.

To be precise, Toyota revealed hybrid versions of both the Corolla Axio sedan and the Corolla Fielder station wagon. The two vehicles are equipped with the brand’s Toyota Hybrid System II that pairs a 73hp (74PS) 1.5-liter Atkinson Cycle gasoline engine to a 60hp (61PS) electric motor producing a combined 99hp (100PS). The battery is placed under the rear seat.

Toyota says both front-wheel drive models achieve a fuel efficiency of 33.0 km/L (equal to 3.0l/100km and 77.6mpg US) under the JC08 test cycle of the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).

There are only minor changes to the design of the hybrid Corollas such as the bespoke grille with a blue emblem, an exclusive Light Blue Metallic body color, blue-highlighted instrument gauges with a 4.2-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) color multi-information display for the hybrid-system, and different seat upholstery.

The Japanese automaker said its monthly sales target for the local market is 1,000 units for the hybrid sedan and 1,500 for the estate version, with prices starting from 1,925,000 yen (US$19,700 / €14,800).
