When they first started out, both Lexus and Infiniti, the two main Japanese premium brands, took a lot of inspiration from the already established German manufacturers, which were already making advanced and competent cars, competing only amongst themselves.

Thus, the alphanumeric (usually a letter or a combination of letters followed by digits) naming scheme was adopted early on, and while Lexus’ has remained relatively constant and understandable, Infiniti’s went through several changes, the biggest of which is currently being set in motion by the launch of the all-new Q50.

Touted as a turning point for the marque, the start of “a new Infiniti,” the model is the first of the new Q-named sedans, and so far an appreciated appearance in magazine tests. For crossovers and SUVs, the plan is to have them all called QX – the FX becomes QX70.
