Today’s China represents a new Eldorado for near or pure luxury car brands, with PSA Peugeot Citroën being one of many automotive groups looking to slice off another piece of the pie. With Peugeot and Citroen already established in China’s mainstream market, the French launched Citroen’s DS marque as a standalone brand in the premium segments.
Now, 15 months after the launch of the DS brand in China with a fresh line of cars, the company and its Chinese partner Changan kicked off local production of its biggest model to date, the DS5, at their Shenzhen plant.
Citroen said that two more upcoming DS models would be made locally, a new “three-box saloon and an SUV”, the latter being the production version of the Wild Rubis Concept, which surprisngly, will not be sold in Europe.
To further fuel the DS brand’s growth, the French company plans to increase its network of DS stores to 50, covering 40 of China’s major cities, by the end of the year.
