Honda has started production of the 2014 Accord Hybrid sedan at its Marysville, Ohio, plant with first deliveries scheduled for later this year. The Accord Hybrid has been rated by the EPA at 50 mpg city (4.7 l/100 km), making it the most fuel efficient model among competing 4-door sedans, according to a statement from Honda.
The Japanese carmaker says the car’s city fuel economy rating is 3 mpg higher than the closest segment competitor (which it doesn’t mention), with the calculated driving range of 673 miles (1,083km) being 46 miles (74km) bigger than any competing vehicle in its segment. The EPA highway and combined fuel economy ratings remain unchanged from the initial estimates, at 45 mpg (5.2 l/100 km) and 47 mpg (5 l/100 km), respectively.
Its hybrid powertrain consists of a 166-hp electric motor and 141hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine.
It is the first Honda hybrid produced in Ohio and joins the Indiana-built Civic Hybrid as the second Honda hybrid built in the U.S. To accommodate its production, Honda says it invested $18.8 million (€14.3 million) in a 94,000-square-foot (8,732-square-meter) expansion of the Marysville Auto Plant.
“With more than 30 years of experience producing the Accord in Marysville, our associates have continued to advance our capabilities, and the new 50-mpg rated Accord Hybrid is a very special milestone in our history of innovation in Ohio,” said Rob May, Plant Manager of the Marysville Auto Plant.
Honda hasn’t yet announced pricing for the 2014 Accord Hybrid. The 115MPGe 2014 Accord Plug-In Hybrid is priced from $39,780 (€30,335).
