Nissan has been telling us that it’s revitalized Nismo sub-brand has been a success with the company selling 3,700 Juke Nismo crossovers in Europe, Japan and the U.S. between launch in January and the end of July, while sales of Z Nismo Coupe account for 15 to 30 percent of Nissan Z model sales depending on market. Not bad, but what’s a sub-brand without a crown jewel?
Be patient because that crown jewel is in the making as we speak. Of course, we’re referring to the GT-R Nismo, the ultimate production version of the series, which will be, if not the, one of the last hurrahs of the much lauded R35 before its replacement arrives in late 2015.
Set to go on sale in 2014, the flagship version of the GT-R series was photographed undergoing high-speed tests at the Nürburgring track in Germany. These images reveal some of the styling and aerodynamic tweaks on the Nismo model including the redesigned front bumper with a new front lip spoiler and shark-gill-like vents on the side, the re-contoured and deeper side skirts, a larger rear wing and a new rear bumper, also with the same style side vents, and different tail pipes. The boxy rear end with the air slits kind of reminds us of the F40, to be frank…
Naturally, there will be an updated and re-trimmed interior, while Nissan, or shall we say, Nismo engineers, will re-tune and upgrade the chassis to improve handling.
In standard form, the GT-R’s twin-turbocharged V6 puts out 545HP and 463 lb-ft. Officially, Nissan is keeping quiet about the Nismo edition’s powertrain, but unofficially, sources have stated that it will exceed 570HP and will be able to complete the 0-100km/h (62mph) in as little as 2 seconds flat.
