Eventually, someone had to make a video comparison of the VW Golf GTI Mk7 and its diesel alter ego, the Golf GTD Mk7. While looking almost identical both inside and out, the two “hot” Golfs are aimed at different types of customers.

The GTI customer puts performance first and fuel economy second, while the GTD client is the type of driver that always keeps his or her eyes on the fuel economy indicator, no matter what type of car he or she is sitting in, even when looking for some performance.

Auto Express put the two cars side by side and discovered they’re very much alike, except for one major detail: the engine. While the GTI is a higher-revving, faster and louder machine, the VW Golf GTD is a more toned-down car, both in terms of sensations and performance. Its 181hp (184PS) engine definitely qualifies it as a fast car, but it’s not as fast as the 217hp (220PS) GTI. However, in terms of fuel economy, the diesel GTD is the undisputed winner.

It’s the kind of discussion that could go on for days, so you’re welcome to take sides in the commentary section.
