For many auto enthusiasts, myself included, the first generation Mazda MX-5 (or Miata), is a modern-day classic that should be spared the fate of the Pontiac Fiero.
However, truth to be said, the Japanese firm sold so many of them in the 10 years it remained in production, that there are more than enough examples for to go around for collectors, racers, and replica and kit car makers alike, which brings us to this strange eBay find.
According to the eBay seller, “this one of a kind Lotus and Veilside inspired concept car was built for promotional use and was originally built for and sold to a car wash owner for 15k,” having won a trophy at the Knotts Car show in 2007.
The listing says it’s a 2007 model, which we assume refers to the date of the kit-car build, as we looked up the VIN that reveals the car is a 1994 model with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine.
Last we checked, the highest bid on eBay for the MX-5 was US$5,656 (about €4,180 at today’s exchange rates).

“VERY FUN! This one of a kind Lotus and Veilside inspired concept car was built for promotional use and was originally built for and sold to a car wash owner for 15k. The RESERVE is ONLY 5k so that’s only 1/3 the price when it was a new build! People always ask about the car and assume you paid at least 25k for it! We have it advertised other places so we reserve the right to sell it at ANY time. Would look great with your own custom emblems, Lotus emblems or no emblems as it is now.
In 2007 it won a trophy at the Knotts Car show (The largest kit car show in the USA) and it was also featured in Kit Car Builder Magazine. Snap this unique beauty up while you can! At such a low price, this conversation piece is an incredible deal and will certainly retain it’s value.
This beautiful concept car is a stick shift and is built on a ’94 Mazda Miata donor car. Gas mileage is great at about 28 MPG and is quite reliable. It has about 3k miles on the build and 95k on the engine. It only has about 3k miles since the build because it was parked in front of a car wash to promote it and it worked like a charm! (The owner recently sold the car wash and retired). It has AC, CD stereo system, custom wheels and it is in very good shape over all! Due to the attention it got, there was some scratching here and there so we will even repaint it in the color of your choice FREE OF CHARGE! The yellow looks great but would also look great in red or silver.”
