BMW’s laser headlights that it optionally offers on the new i8 mid-engined hybrid sports car don’t only look cool and different on the car, but also offer a significant visibility advantage, even compared to the standard-fit LED ones.
They’ve been brought up many time, being one of the definite talking points when it came to the i8’s exterior look, but a video explanation is more than welcome, given that this is new tech that has yet to proliferate.
If this was not already clear, the lasers are only used for high beams, and in this application they reportedly double the range that the light can reach, taking it up to 600 m or 1970 ft.
Another advantage is the reduced strain caused to oncoming cars, as the light is now focused and does not spread as much as in the case of a conventional setup.
