At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, German start-up Innovative Mobility Automobile (IMA) unveiled an electric single-seater pre-production prototype called Colibri. Since then, the company says it has racked up more than 700 pre-orders for the Colibri, which is scheduled for production in late 2014.
The Colibri is a single-seater electric car powered by a 24kW (32hp) motor which has a driving range of more than 110 km (68 miles). The manufacturer says the batteries can be recharged to 80 percent of their capacity in only 20 minutes at a standard outlet. Thanks to its curb weight of only 440kg (970lbs), the little EV sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and reaches an electronically-limited top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).
While it offers only one seat, practicality is somewhat saved by its boot capacity of 180 liters (6.35 cubic feet).
Innovative Mobility says the car will cost €8,900 ($12,050) when it goes on sale, with owners also having to pay a monthly €55 ($75) for the battery lease. The company has an ambitious mid-term goal to reach an annual production of 18,000 units. IMA says it will take orders from 2015, with deliveries to begin in 2016.
There’s one “minor” problem though: Innovative Mobility is still searching for investors to be able to launch production of the Colibri. However, the fully-functional prototype exists and is demonstrated in the video posted below.
