A GM spokesman dismissed reports about killing Holden altogether after 2017, when it shuts down its manufacturing and other operations in Australia – at least as a brand name, since it will become nothing more than an importer and distributor of numerous GM vehicles,.
Speaking to Autonews, GM spokesperson Greg Martin said that the company will build Holden-branded cars and trucks in other countries and export them to Australia and New Zealand.
He added that GM is currently working on a plan to set up a new Holden business for the sales service and distribution of the vehicles, and repair parts.
While Martin would not comment on the future of current GM products built in Australia and exported to the U.S., the termination of Holden’s Elizabeth plant means nothing less than the death of the Holden Commodore-based Chevrolet SS sports saloon and the Holden Caprice-based Chevrolet PPV (Police Pursuit Vehicle) and Detective versions. Whether GM will replace these cars remains a mystery at this time.
