With so much reshuffling going on within GM and its overseas branches, some of which are closing, while others have an uncertain future ahead, it’s hard to speculate what exactly they will do to keep on going.
For Holden, the fate of its Australian manufacturing operation is sealed, but its future as another GM sub-brand is far from it. In fact, CarAdvice says the Australian automaker could start using Cadillac platforms to underpin the next-gen Commodore, wherever these cars may be built…
Cadillac is currently on a bit of a roll, enjoying a lot more attention than it has in years, with the ATS and CTS sedans that it currently sells and the upcoming ATS coupe.
There’s a possibility the new Commodore would again share its underpinnings with a Chevrolet SS, though, a simple rebadging operation was denied by Cadillac’s chief marketing officer, Uwe Ellinghaus, who said: “We are not going back to badge engineering… Customers are not dumb, they are cosmopolitan, they travel the world and find the same car under the same brand name. Been there, done that, not going there again.”
Still, he did concede that platform sharing is the way to go and be profitable in the future, but when asked if he could state it with certainty if this Cadillac-Chevy-Holden sharing scheme had actually been discussed by decision makers, he replied “I do not know, I cannot comment.”
