Autonomous mobility tech makes a lot of sense in military applications, as it would finally stop the ingrained tradition of massacring thousands of young men for the usually outdated ideals of much fewer, older men, if it were applied on a global scale. It currently doesn’t seem that much more advanced than what Google is testing in Nevada (and other states), as you can see in the video posted after the jump.
What you will see there is a fully-autonomous convoy of transport trucks negotiating various types of roads and environments on their own. Laden with sensors, they can detect moving obstacles, and decide whether to stop or avoid – several types were planned along the route, including tight intersections, oncoming traffic and pedestrians crossing.
The project was born out of the cooperation of TARDEC and Lockheed Martin with US Central Command, Army Capabilities Integration Center and Combined Arms Support Command. The 3rd Cavalry Regiment stepped in with the trucks and helped make this demo happened.
The trial took place in Fort Wood, Texas and it was completed successfully. A lot more information, including detailed technical data can be found on Defense-Update.
