Mercedes was the only manufacturer mad enough to plonk a 6.2-liter V8 engine in its compact executive offering, the W204 C-Class – its closest rival in terms of displacement, within the same size class, was the Lexus IS-F, with its 5.0-liter V8.

The result was the C63 AMG and it was the first car on record from the manufacturer that was actually reengineered to become a performance model, rather than just having nice bolt-on bits added, according to the reviews published around its 2008 launch.

Now, after years of loyal service, it’s being retired, soon to be replaced by a sleeker, more efficient turbocharged model.

Chris Harris decided it was definitely worth giving it the attention one last time, so he got hold of an estate model and slid it around in slow motion for our enjoyment, mostly talking about its qualities and uniqueness and only briefly mentioning its shortcomings.

It’s a nice teary-eyed video for a unique car with a massive engine for its size and reportedly brilliant handling – Harris says the C63 was more than comparable to an M3, even being better than it in some ways… Check out the video after the virtual jump.
