Jaguar must really have some issues with itself as a brand, if its idea of funny, witty commercials revolves around poking its rivals with a stick. I mean, the Maserati Ghibli is a nice car, and I find it much more desirable than the XF, a car whose leather-wrapped steering wheel disintegrates after a few tens of thousands of miles and is not known to be built that much better than what we’ve come to expect from Italian cars…
Moreover, the Ghibli looks and sounds better than the XF, doesn’t it?
Jaguar’s US branch recently posted a tweet following the airing of the Super Bowl commercials, which stated the following: “Did you know that #ghibli means hot air? Seems appropriate.”
However, this does in no way make Maserati look bad, as the company was well aware of the origins of their chosen nameplate – it’s a wind that blows in the North of Africa and it’s by no means something to be made fun or alluded at in this way… There’s a difference between “hot air” and “wind.”
Here’s a list of other cars named after winds: (Austin) Maestro, Dongfeng (stands for Eastern Wind), (Lincoln) Zephyr, (Maserati) Bora, Karif, Khamsin, Mistral, Shamal, (Pagani) Zonda, Huayra, (VW) Bora, Passat, Corrado, Santana, Golf and, of course, the Scirocco.
So yeah Jaguar, you might as well start mocking all of those while you’re at it (I’m sure that’s just a small part of all there are); doing a terrific job so far!
