On Wednesday, General Motors India lifted the veils off the new Chevrolet Adra concept at the Delhi Auto Expo 2014. Developed entirely by Indian designers at the GM Technical Centre-India (GMTC-I) in Bangalore, the Adra crossover concept made its global debut at the show.

GM says the small crossover concept features Chevrolet’s traditional design language while “addressing local customer expectations to cater to the next generation of Indian car buyers.” In plain English, that means it previews a future production model for India and other similar markets.

The Adra has many of the advantages of a traditional SUV, including a high ground clearance, high seating position and a generous interior space. However, just like other concept and production crossovers of this size, it lacks four-wheel drive. Its compact dimensions mean it will be adequate for use in the city as well.

“The Adra is a major achievement for our local designers, who conceptualized and designed the model from the ground up. It represents a new possibility for the fast-growing compact SUV segment,” said GM India President and Managing Director Lowell Paddock.

Besides the Adra study, Chevrolet also unveiled the new Beat hatchback for India – called Spark in the U.S. and Europe. The Adra and Beat are among 13 concept and production vehicles on display at the Chevrolet stand.
