The all-new Ford F-150, the all-aluminum one that was just revealed with lower weight and downsized powerplants might be getting a diesel engine in the not too distant future. The unit is a V6, displacing three liters, and it would make its debut no sooner than 2018 – its codename is “Lion.”
We get this information from TTAC (TheTruthAboutCars) which quotes inside sources that have so far provided accurate data.
Apparently, a diesel F-150 was in the works a few years back, but the 2008 recession came and cancelled Ford’s plan to bring it to market. The report suggests that the Blue Oval doesn’t want to be left behind the pack, now that its rivals offer or are planning to offer oil burners in their half-ton trucks.
Another bit of information that was speculated on in the article was the horsepower figure of the all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 that debuted with the F-150 in Detroit. It’s estimated to produce 290 to 300 hp, though the torque figure that accompanies it is not known.
