Update: Renault dropped a family photo of the new Twingo. More pictures and initial details will follow tonight.

What we believe to be official images of the all-new Renault Twingo, popped up on our online radar today affording us an early glimpse of the French mini, which in this author’s eyes, has a kind of Renault 5 and Fiat 500 vibe to it. Whereas the former was intentional and is something that we’ll no doubt hear from Renault, don’t bet on the latter being mentioned…

While it continues to compete in the mini or A-segment, the new Twingo is a completely different beast than the two previous iterations of the car, the innovative original model produced for 15 years from 1992 to 2007, and its conventional and duller successor from 2007 to today.

Sharing a platform and powertrain components with the upcoming Smart ForFour, the new car not only offers five instead of three doors, but it also takes all the mechanicals from the front and places them at the back for a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout.

Information remains limited right now, but we hear that the new Twingo will incorporate the use of a new three-cylinder range of engines paired to both manual and dual-clutch transmissions. A sportier version of Renault’s five-door competitor to the Fiat 500 and Opel Adam should be in the cards as well.
