Word is out that Subaru is currently working on a new and downsized six-cylinder boxer that will most likely finds its way under the hood of the all-new 2015 Legacy, though it’s been speculated that it will only become available after the car gets restyled and updated, in about three years’ time.
A Subaru source told Car&Driver magazine that the new engine will likely drop in displacement from the current 3.6- to 3.0-liters, but torque, power and efficiency are all expected to go up, especially if a turbocharger hypothesis holds true.
Until then, Subaru will take the time to create a more meaningful Legacy 2.5i Sport. The outgoing equivalent has minimal changes over Premium-spec. This new one could be receiving the new 2.0-liter flat-four that’s also found in the Forester Turbo, latest WRX and BRZ in non-turbo form (pictured).
However, there’s a chance they will negate any true sporty credentials if they plonk in another of their CVT gearboxes without even considering to offer a manual.
