The VW Golf GTI is without a doubt, one of the best all-round hot hatchbacks in the market: it’s perfectly suited for day-to-day use, the suspension won’t shatter your spine, it has ample space, its size makes it suitable for city use, it’s pretty economical for a 217hp (220PS) car and… the list could continue.

Sure, the seventh-generation Golf GTI is the victim of the times, meaning it is bigger than ever, it has adopted all sorts of gadgets and it wants to please everybody, but that doesn’t affect its usefulness and allure.

In the review you are about to see, XCAR presenter Alex Goy describes the VW Golf GTI Mk7 as “almost perfect”. So what does it lack? Well, its 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 6.5 seconds (6.4 seconds with the Performance package) doesn’t make it one of the fastest hot hatches available.
