Whatever your name is and whichever motoring publication (or space agency/racing team) you work for, the acceleration of the McLaren P1 will be a shock to you.

The car whose exhaust glows blue under hard acceleration is so fast that you’re not even legally allowed to drive it in race mode on the road – you need a straight-ish track and tutoring from the Stig to be able to handle that.

Naturally, EVO magazine’s take on the P1 is the same as all the others. The car does the exact opposite of splitting opinions and simply can’t be faulted for what it’s supposed to do: be as fast and as grippy as possible. Part of that grip is down to the ultra-concave rear spoiler that looks like an artificial turtle pond and the multitude of fins and ducts smattered along the carbon body in relevant places.

The tires aren’t hugely-wide, and the car is still meant to be driven on the road. It has an adequate ride height, all the creature comforts found in the 12C and the promise of fun at any speed.

The difference between this and the 12C is that the latter feels a bit detached, according to some reports, whereas the P1 is much more of an experience to drive – to me, the noise(s) it makes put it in the same coolness league as the Pagani Huayra, with its diversity shrieks, squeaks and hisses designed to melt a petrolhead’s heart.
