The new BMW i8 coupe may boast an impressive combined fuel economy of 2.1l/100 km (equal to 111.2mpg US or 134.5mpg UK) on the EU test cycle for as long as the battery has juice in it, but with a starting price of $135,700 (plus delivery) in the States, €126,000 in Germany and £99,125 in the UK, it’s not like you hit the money-saving jackpot. Still, the hefty price tag hasn’t deterred buyers from placing in their orders.
Quite the contrary, actually, as according to BMW’s latest release in which it conveyed the message about customer deliveries of the new the plug-in hybrid sports coupe beginning this June, demand continues to be very strong.
“The start of series production of customer vehicles will commence in April,” said BMW in a statement. “Customers have already been able to place pre-orders for the BMW i8 in all major markets since autumn 2013. However, demand for the BMW i8 is already exceeding the planned production volume during ramp-up.”
No specific numbers were given out by BMW about sales and annual production units.
