As if Land Rover’s nomenclature wasn’t busy enough (some non-car enthusiasts would say confusing, too), the British brand used the Geneva Motor Show to ratify plans for the birth of a new range of Discovery branded models.

Much in the same way that Land Rover uses the Range Rover moniker for its more premium offerings such as the Sport and Evoque, the automaker will now employ the Discovery name to a new family of more traditional or mainstream, if you prefer, SUVs.

The Discovery range will include at least two models, beginning with the replacement of the compact Freelander (called LR2 on North America), which we recently spied testing in Europe, and continuing with the successor to the bigger Discovery (sold as the LR4 in North America), that will likely share its underpinnings with the Range Rover.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Land Rover makes a similar announcement about the Defender family of vehicles in the not so distant future.
