Whatever’s going on in the minds that run McLaren is probably too much for us to currently process. They launched the 12C (born MP4 dash), then took their time developing the unique and much-anticipated P1, only to then idle production of the first model, release another more powerful one based on it (but with a P1 face) and now we learn that they are looking at a new flagship, powered by a Honda hybrid system.
Not at all confusing…
Now, Car&Driver reports that the automaker is already hard at work on said top model, which currently bears the internal designation P15. They say it will likely come with less power than the P1, and possibly, a much lower starting price.
They say they got their information from McLaren CEO, Mike Flewitt, who reportedly confirmed their continued use of carbon-fiber structure.
Interestingly, the magazine suggests that the Woking-based manufacturer could seek help from Honda, for the development of the future P15’s powertrain. The connection between the two is made through Formula 1, as the Japanese company has been contracted to supply McLaren with engines for the 2015 season.
We suspect that the final piece in that thought stream was the NSX and its hybrid drive system… However, we’ll have to wait and see if and how this is confirmed before going any further with assumptions/predictions/speculative ideas.
McLaren is planning a smaller, Porsche 911-rivaling model too.
