Part of the engine supply deal that Aston Martin signed with Germany’s AMG was to give up control of five percent of the company’s assets over to Mercedes-Benz. Despite their partnership being in its infancy, there have already been talks of Mercedes looking to cut a bigger slice for itself, and maybe even take Aston over completely.
Now, we learn hear via Autocar magazine that Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche has admitted that this is a possibility, as he is fully aware that the British brand could use a lot more than just engines. However, the top official neither confirmed nor denied the speculations, saying (about Aston) that it’s “a fantastic brand,” and that they are “willing to support its further development.”
Whether by further he actually means deepening the cooperation, we don’t know. However, Mercedes could really do with an extra name under its belt other than its own, at least if it wants to compete on all levels with its main rivals, particularly VW which has Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bugatti.
Naturally, if this were to materialize, then all logic points to them also making an Aston-branded SUV.
First things first, though, let’s see (and hear) the AMG-powered Vantages out on the road.
