If you look at the current Ford Taurus, it seems a bit bulky and disproportionate from some angles (especially from the back), and nowhere near as modern as its smaller brother, the sleek Fusion.
Now, we hear that with the complete redesign of the former, planned to be completed and revealed in the third quarter of 2015, Ford will be operating several important changes to its formula, in order to bring it in line with its other more modern offerings.
The crew at Edmunds discovered just what they are up to, after sitting down with an unnamed insider. The informer was quoted as saying “the problem with today’s Taurus is that it is overweight and even the high performance SHO is not really competitive. With all the power from the (365-horsepower) V6 EcoBoost, it is pretty hard to overcome the amount of mass that the SHO has to move.”
He goes on to say that the current Taurus SHO, a car built on modified Volvo underpinnings that employed the use of steel where the Swedes used aluminum and it “actually weighs about as much as the stretched Audi A8 L…”
The big news about the next Taurus, then, is the fact that it will be much lighter than it is now, and that it will be based on the same platform as the aforementioned Fusion, a car that’s been met with moderate critical praise. Styling will be brought in line too, and if they play their cards right, then Ford could tempt buyers of low-spec Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class models into their showroom with it.
And, who knows, maybe it will be eventually marketed in Europe as a successor to the Scorpio or Sierra models; this is pure speculation, though.
