Peugeot has communicated a fuel consumption record for the 308 equipped with the new 130hp 1.2-liter PureTech three-cylinder turbo petrol engine, covering 1,810 kilometers (1,124 miles) on a single tank, with an average fuel consumption of 2.85 l/100 km (99.1 mpg UK/82.5 mpg US). The carmaker says is has achieved this figure using a standard production 308 hatchback.
There is a catch, however.; the record was set on a track and not in regular traffic conditions. The Peugeot 308 covered the entire distance on the Almeria circuit in Spain, under the supervision of the French test authority UTAC (Union Technique de l’Automobile, du motocycle et du Cycle).
The car, fitted with the new PureTech 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine and a six-speed manual gearbox ran for more than 32 hours, consuming 51.3 liters of fuel (13.4 US gallons). Several drivers took their turn at the wheel during the test to establish a new record for fuel consumption and distance travelled on a single tank of fuel.
The turbocharged 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine uses high-pressure direct injection (200 bar) and a new generation high efficiency turbo running at 240,000 rpm. The new engine will have its commercial debut on the 308 at the end of March. Official average fuel consumption is 4.6 l/100 km (61.4 mpg UK/51.1 mpg US), with CO2 emissions rated at 107 g/km.
The new engine will add to the 308’s three existing petrol engines (from 82 to 155 hp) and four diesels (from 92 to 150 hp). The PureTech 1.2-liter 3-cylinder unit will also be available on the Peugeot 208 and 2008 in a 110 hp version in the coming weeks.
