A new Mercedes-Benz sports car is coming, possibly revealing itself as early as this summer. It’s the GT AMG, previously known under the name SLC with the internal code C109.
Merc’s goal is to give the new Jaguar F-type R Coupe, Porsche 911 Carrera S, and even the Audi R8 a run for their money, with the car speculated to start from somewhere between $100,000 and $130,000 in the US, and €100,000-€130,000 in most European countries.
That makes it far more attainable than the bigger $200,000 SLS AMG, which is more than welcome even if it means losing the Gullwing doors, though, Mercedes officials are making promises of an even more impressive and dramatic design.
The GT AMG is more of a spiritual successor than a direct replacement for the SLS, from which it borrows its (modified) aluminum spaceframe. Under its long nose, you’ll find Benz’s new twin-turbocharged V8 shared with the next C63 AMG, among other future models, offered in different states of tune, with the base version probably getting close to the 500hp mark.
Mercedes has said that it’s not considering a roadster, but we wouldn’t dismiss it from the GT AMG’s future just yet.
