Volkswagen has operated a number of updates to the economical Transporter BlueMotion and Multivan BlueMotion models, making them even more fuel-efficient.

The updated Transporter BlueMotion averages just 5.8 l/100 km (40.5 mpg US), while the Multivan BlueMotion MPV has a combined fuel consumption of 6 l/100 km (39.2 mpg US). CO2 emissions for the Transporter BlueMotion are 153 g/km, while the Multivan BlueMotion emits 159 g of CO2 per kilometer.

In order to achieve these impressive figures for a van/MPV, VW improved the BlueMotion technologies, which integrate a Start/Stop system, brake energy recovery, tyres with especially low roll resistance, modified engine management and transmission, as well as aerodynamic measures.

Thanks to these measures, VW says the Transporter BlueMotion is up to 1.4 liters per 100 km more fuel-efficient than its lower-powered conventional variants delivering 85PS (83hp) and 102PS (101hp), while the Multivan BlueMotion is up to 1.3 l/100 km more economical than its lesser versions.

Both BlueMotion models are powered by a 2.0-liter TDI engine that produces 114PS (112hp) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, available in the 1,500 – 2,750 rpm range. VW says the Transporter can reach speeds of up to 164 km/h (102 mph), even when fully laden.

Prices in Germany for the Transporter BlueMotion start from €26,560 (excluding VAT), while the Multivan BlueMotion is priced from €37,199.40 (including VAT).
