Sergeant Brad Rummell is a very lucky man, but only because he was paying attention to the road, unlike the 35-year old woman behind the wheel of a white Chevrolet Malibu who was reportedly on her cell phone just before she plowed into his police cruiser in Oklahoma.

The Midwest City officer was returning to his car after conducting a routine traffic stop when he saw the Malibu heading towards him at full speed. Rummell jumped out of harm’s way the last second, with the incident captured on the cruiser’s dashboard camera.

A NewsOn6 report said the distracted driver of the Chevrolet and the person who was pulled over, both suffered minor injuries, while the officer was unharmed.

“She admitted she was on her telephone and that she was in a hurry to get where she was going and not paying attention,”  Midwest City Police Chief Brandon Clabes told local news station Koco.

Clabes pointed out that police officers are trained to turn their wheels towards the curb during a stop, and that’s something that may have helped save his life.

“When she hit the back of the patrol car, it probably veered it at an angle away from Sgt. Rummell as he was running between the cars,” he said.

The woman was cited for reckless driving and faces $295 in fines. Reports about the driver seen texting her lawyer immediately after the crash have not been confirmed…
