We can’t say that we are surprised to learn that McLaren is discontinuing the 12C, previously known as the MP4-12C, after the launch of the 650S (in Coupe and Spider forms), as the latter is essentially a facelifted version of the former with more power and a higher price tag.

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt confirmed the news in a letter sent to existing owners of the 12C in which he mentioned the following:

“The final piece of news I wanted to share with you is regarding 12C production which we have decided to cease in light of the success of 650S. The new car has been so well received since its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show (we already have a six month order bank) we will focus all our capacity at the McLaren Production Centre on 650S. After three years of 12C production, this represents a natural evolution of our model line-up.”

In the same email, Flewitt offered some good news to existing owners of the 12C as McLaren will provide a Technology Upgrade that includes some of the innovations developed for the 650S free of charge from this June.

Among these features is a new Active Aero software which allows the 12C’s existing Airbrake to “sense different driving scenarios, deploying to improve stability when lifting off the throttle or cresting a hill” and a DRS (Drag Reduction System) mode that lowers the wing when driving at speed in a straight line for better high-speed aerodynamics.

Furthermore, there’s an update for Android-based IRIS infotainment system, while more recent 12C models with door buttons will get an external control to lower the windows.

Finally, McLaren added that it is offering a special price to 12C owners on two fresh features introduced with the 650, the reversing camera and DAB radio.
