The term next-gen is thrown around far-far too liberally in the gaming industry these days, and few titles (and the technologies behind them) are actually worthy of being called that. The upcoming action/driving game from Ubisoft, Watchdogs, is one of those titles, though…

We knew the game was going to be a pretty one, but what the developers have managed to create (in collaboration with graphics specialists nVidia) is one of the most realistic looking open worlds ever. It’s not only very detailed and well-polished, but they’ve also made sure that the usual unwanted screen effects that can ruin the immersion have been dealt with.

The game’s engine features several filters and effects that specifically aim to make movement across the screen fluid and realistic, with no tearing or jagged edges. There’s also an advanced horizon-based lighting system in place that has the aim of making all lit objects look like they’re being lit in a realistic fashion.

Imagine that Watchdogs is also a game with a focus on driving through the city (of Chicago of the near future), so even if you’re not into the whole shooting, hacking and eavesdropping thing, then free roaming exploration should still be a very pleasurable experience. The game launches May 27 on Xbox One and 360, PlayStation 3 and 4, WiiU as well as PC.
