Tesla Motors broke Norway’s previous record for monthly sales of a single model (regardless of engine type) with 1,493 Model S sedans sold in March in its No.2 market worldwide. The previous record dated from 1986, when Ford sold 1,454 Sierra sedans in a single month.
According to registrations from Norwegian transportation officials, Tesla sold more than double the amount of cars it usually sells during a month and way more than the typically results of the market’s top monthly seller. The second-best seller in March was the VW Golf, with 624 units.
Tesla Motors has four dealerships in Norway, two in the country’s capital Oslo and two more on the west coast. The Model S is very popular despite the fact that some have criticized the government for offering tax incentives for a luxury vehicle.
Norway is one of the most important markets for electric vehicles in the world due to its consistent efforts to incentivize sales of environmental-friendly vehicles. The government offers EV owners generous tax incentives and the country has a good charging infrastructure, with the stations offering free charges. Furthermore, many municipalities allow green vehicles free charging and parking in city lots, as well as access to high-speed driving lanes.
In February, Norway’s top selling car was another EV, the Nissan Leaf, with 484 deliveries.
