The updated Toyota Passo (also sold as the Daihatsu Boon in Japan) is the first model to be equipped with the carmaker’s new generation of petrol engines, more specifically the 1.0-liter petrol engine. The new unit is approximately 30 percent more fuel efficient than the previous powerplant.

Average fuel economy for the Toyota Passo 1.0 has been officially rated at 27.6 km/L (3.6 l/100km or 64.9 mpg US), the best for gasoline vehicles in Japan. The value also exceeds the fuel efficiency standards for 2015 set by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) by 20 percent.

CO2 emissions are 84 g/km, 75 percent lower than the 2005 standards established under MLIT’s Approval System for Low-Emission Vehicles, making it eligible for full tax reductions under the Japanese government’s tax incentive program.

The newly-developed 69PS (68hp) 1.0-liter engine has a maximum thermal efficiency of 37 percent, thanks to increased compression ratio, optimized valve timing, lowered friction, and the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and an integrated exhaust manifold and cylinder head. The engine also features the Toyota Stop & Start System which cuts off the engine at approximately 9 km/h when slowing to a stop.

The Passo 1.0 is offered with both front and all-wheel drive. In addition to the new engine, the Toyota Passo is comes with new available features, including automatic retractable side mirrors and front door windows with glass that reduces ultraviolet and infrared light.

The model comes in two distinct designs: one for the Passo X and Passo G, and another for the Passo + Hana model. The former feature elongated headlamps and front bumpers, while the latter has a softer front profile, with the upper grille and fog lamps designed with round motifs to match the lower grille. Toyota offers optional G packages for both the Passo X and Passo + Hana models which feature a plated finish on the interior door handles, center air vent knobs and shift knob, among other upgrades.

Toyota also offers specially equipped Welcab models for the disabled and elderly. The carmaker aims to sell 5,000 units of the Passo each month in Japan.
