If someone asked you what is the most successful Ferrari racing chassis of all times, what car would you think about? I, for one, would expect it to be a car that has won races in Formula One, IndyCar or at least the Le Mans 24 Hours. We’ll, it’s not from any of these disciplines.
It is a 1957 Ferrari 625/250 TRC with chassis number #0672 that has won events including the Grand Prix of Mexico and races in Laguna Seca, Salt Lake City, Riverside, Nassau, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, Pomona, Sacramento and more.
The car was ordered new from Ferrari in 1957 by California-based racer John von Neumann, along with another 625 TRC. Both models were fitted with 2.5-liter ex-Le Mans four-cylinder engines.
However, von Neumann wanted more and replaced the engine of the first car with a 250TR 3.0-liter V12 engine, effectively creating the only TRC with a factory V12 powerplant. Thanks to its light body and strong engine, the 625/250 TRC kept on winning races even after it was sold by von Neumann in 1961.
