The complex BMW i8 has a hybrid powertrain combining a 129hp electric motor that drives the front wheels with a 228hp 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine that sends power to the rear axle. There’s another small boosting electric motor that also works as a generator and a 7.1 kWh battery which allows the i8 to travel up to 22 miles (35 km) on electric power alone.

The sound of the 3-cylinder engine was a very pleasant surprise for the Auto Express reviewer, who likens it to a flat-six engine. But how is the i8 like to drive? The power delivery from both units is smooth, the steering is light and has a crisp turn-in, while road-holding in curves is neutral than prone to oversteer, which is not what one would expect from a BMW sports car.

However, the BMW i8 doesn’t have much in common with previous or current sports cars, be it from Munich or any other automaker. Which is exactly why some will choose it over conventional sports cars.
