BMW’s line of front-wheel drive models, inaugurated by the 2-Series Active Tourer, could get an attractive roadster model called the Z2. Unlike the larger Z4 (pictured here), the Z2 could feature a fabric top and share the platform with the upcoming Mini Cabriolet and other Mini models.
Thanks to its size and fabric top, the Z2 should be a lightweight, back-to-basics roadster, lacking in complex and heavy technologies. According to a report from Car&Driver, the Z2 should tip the scales at around 2,500 pounds (1,134 kg).
Unlike the retro-styled Mini, the rumored BMW Z2 is said to feature a more serious, modern design that should appeal to a wider audience, with BMW reportedly hoping the car will bring a whole new generation of buyers to the brand.
C&D’s grape vine says the Z2 should be offered with a number of three- and four-cylinder engines from BMW’s modular engine platform with up to 230 hp. On top of these, they say BMW could also add a Z2 M with at least 300 hp and four-wheel drive.
According to the same report, the car could be introduced in late 2016 or 2017, with prices guesstimated to range from $30,000 (€21,788) for a base model to $50,000 (€36,324) for the M version.
Of course, since this is just a rumor without any official confirmation, take everything you read with a grain of salt…
