The BMW i8 weighs just under 1.5 tons unladen and while that may still seem a bit hefty for a sports car, it really could have been much worse. Think about how heavy the conventionally-built Fisker Karma is, even compared to other cars its size, and you begin to understand just what kind of savings are at work here.
BMW has released a video detailing the way they build the i8, and the numerous innovations that make it possible. It’s striking because it not only looks like something from ten years in the future, but according to the clip it’s also built like one too.
Nothing is spared from contributing to the overall weight saving, from chassis to dashboard, everything is honed specifically for that purpose.
As the reviews suggest, the i8 is still not 100 percent there as a sports car, but for a first attempt, it’s very close to being one.
