There’s definitely room in Mercedes’ range for a sleek coupe-like sedan to slot in between the front-wheel drive CLA and the proper tapered limousine that is the big CLS, according to the brand’s officials. It would be a model based on the architecture of the all-new C-Class, and one of a handful of models planned to be developed from its underpinnings.

Speaking to Autoexpress magazine, Mercedes’ research and development chief, Thomas Weber admitted the brand’s interest in a four-door coupe based on the C-Class. “Yes, there is room between the CLA and the CLS,” he said.

So, the new C-Class range will be more encompassing than ever: sedan, long-wheelbase sedan (for China), estate, coupe, convertible and four-door coupe/GT model, plus the next GLK crossover that will use the same basic internals too.

This is the minimum number of models we’re set to see, as according Weber, they are also “intensively looking at remaining niches that will provide us with profitability and growth.”

Mercedes has already gone ahead with that plan and created its very own BMW X6; in fact, this all wreaks of Mercedes trying to catch up with BMW and its much more elaborate range of multiple similar models. It may sound like a boring approach, but it’s so far proved highly successful for the Bavarians.
