The VW Passat is an institution, at least in Europe. It’s a model many family men and women swear by and the flock to buy the next one and the next one and so on. They appreciate the durability, understated and timeless (i.e. plain) look, the efficient diesel engines and its competent road manners – it was never as good to drive as a Ford Mondeo or Mazda6, but it definitely was above average in that respect.
Now, while China already knows what it looks like, we Europeans, the traditional market for the Passat, are still waiting to see it. Knowing that it will most likely be identical to the Chinese one, with its previous-gen Audi A6 rear lights and featureless monolithic shape.
Only difference between the PRC-bound Passat (known locally as Magotan) and the upcoming Euro variant is the wheelbase, which is obviously extended in order to comfortably accommodate rear occupants.
If you want to get a sense of proportion and eliminate surprise completely from the new Passat reveal equation, then look at the Chinese photos we previously posted, then juxtapose that image next to the recently-released sketches, which according to AMS magazine are official, posted below.
