Peugeot is rumored to be considering a slightly smaller, three-door version of its 2008 crossover that would compete with Renault’s upcoming Kwid SUV. Positioned below the 2008 in Peugeot’s lineup, a three-door crossover version would use a shorter version of the 2008’s platform, which means it would be approximately 3,900mm (153.5in) long, making make it about 300mm (11.8in) shorter than the 2008.

According to a report from Auto Express, the French carmaker hasn’t chosen a name for the future model yet, but is said to consider naming the crossover 2008 RX or 1008. As far as design is concerned, the small SUV is expected to be influenced by the Peugeot HR1 Concept (pictured) unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, which also previewed the 2008.

The 2008 RX/1008 will have a sportier stance than the 2008, but similar stepped headlights and claw-style taillights. Engine options will be carried over from the 208 and 2008 lineups, including the base 1.0-liter VTi producing 68 hp. The three-door crossover could also be offered with a three-cylinder turbocharged unit.

The new model is expected to arrive around the same time as Renault’s Kwid, in summer 2016. The UK publication said it estimates prices to start from around £12,000 (€14,710) in Britain, making it nearly £1,000 (€1,225) cheaper than the 2008.

The three-door crossover will signal a Peugeot SUV offensive that will also include an all-new 3008 and possibly a large 6008 for China to rival the Audi Q5.
