With almost 5 million units sold in 30 years, the Seat Ibiza is the most important model in the company’s history. As part of celebrations for the model’s 30th anniversary, Seat has arranged a meeting of all four generations of its B-segment model at the Sitges-Terramar racing circuit in Spain, a historic track that opened in 1923 with the Spanish Grand Prix and is now pretty much in its original state.
The four generations of the Seat Ibiza raced on the circuit’s inclines of 60 and 90 degrees and worn asphalt, with the lineup including the very first Ibiza to leave the factory in 1984 and the latest version of the model.
“It is amazing to see how the automotive sector has developed. The first Ibiza was a true explosion of design joy”, said Isidre López, head of Seat Historical Cars, recalling that the first generation Ibiza was the first “100% Seat”.
Teo García, the engineer in charge of the Ibiza at the Technical Center, adds that the key to success for the first Ibiza was “successfully getting into an intermediate segment as a city car targeted at a typical family of the time, with two parents and two children, so that they could get around the city but also make their first trips out and about”. Its design and the System Porsche engine also helped the Ibiza to become a best-seller, the engineer says.
