Several valuable lessons can be extracted from this video uploaded by The Smoking Tire. It features footage from onboard an eventful stage of the High Desert Trails Rally, when the car’s mid-mounted battery came loose while it was traveling at over 100 mph or 160 km/h.
It’s positioned inside the car, behind the front seats, in the area where the back seat used to be. Probably sheering one or more bolts, it begins to move around, creating distracting sparks and the classic burning smell. The co-driver notices right away, though he doesn’t immediately suggest stopping – he does when the smell reaches him…
Good thing they both had Sparco racing overalls to protect them…
This is why zip ties are so very useful for tying things down – they’re cheap, replaceable and you can always use more than one for extra safety; it’s probably the way in which the driver and co-driver fixed their battery problem before setting off again.
