VW has released fresh details about the Golf Sportsvan as deliveries of the compact MPV will soon start in Germany and other European markets. Based on the MQB platform, the successor to the Golf Plus is up to 90 kg (198 lbs) lighter and up to 20 percent more fuel-efficient, thanks to its new powerplants.
The Golf Sportsvan is available with a range of four turbocharged petrol engines that produce 85PS (84hp), 110PS (109hp), 125PS (123hp) and 150PS (148hp), as well as two turbodiesels producing 110 PS (109hp) and 150PS (148hp).
With the exception of the entry-level gasoline engine, all units are available with an optional dual-clutch gearbox (DSG). The most fuel-efficient model is the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion that averages 3.9 l/100 km (60.3 mpg US) and emits 101 g/km CO2.
VW also sells an independent BlueMotion version that features aerodynamic modifications and tires optimized for low rolling resistance, the Golf Sportsvan TDI BlueMotion. This model averages 3.6 l/100 km (65.3 mpg US) and emits 95 g/km CO2.
VW says the Golf Sportsvan offers a versatile interior including a rear bench seat with 180 mm (7in) longitudinal adjustment and a maximum cargo capacity of 1,520 liters. However, it doesn’t say what justifies the use of “sports” in model’s name.
The five-seater MPV is the first Golf to be offered with the Blind Spot Monitor that integrates Rear Traffic Alert. While driving, the system warns the driver of vehicles in the blind spot. When reversing out of a parking space, the system also recognises cross-traffic approaching behind the car that can be difficult for the driver to see. It does more than warn the driver, automatically activating an emergency braking function if a collision is imminent.
The VW Golf Sportsvan is priced from €19,625 ($27,320) in Germany.
