When they are not trying to climb impossible ramps in their over-powered all-wheel drive buggies, Icelanders like to drive them very fast on water to see which can go a longer distance before sinking. I know; they are very interesting people…

Gudbjørn Grimsson is one of them, or better said, the best of them, as he recently set a world record by crossing a 1,001-feet (305-meter) long river during an extreme Formula Offroad race in Iceland.

His maximum speed while hydroplanning in his Jeep-based buggy was 87 km/h (54 mph), thanks to the special tires and the 1,600hp twin turbo 7.4-liter Ford engine prepared by Nelson Racing.

Head down to see Grimsson’s exploit and to find out from him what’s it like to cross 1,001 feet of water at 87 km/h.
