While we wait for someone to create a song out of this video (if you do, send it over), let us tell you that, as a matter of fact, the tractor-trailer that overturned along Interstate 95 in Delaware on Wednesday morning wasn’t just transporting one hive but some…460 hives unleashing a swarm of an estimated 16 to 20 million bees.
The 55-year-old driver of the truck and his two male passengers ages 24 and 25 were taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital after suffering minor injuries from the crash and some 50 to 100 stings each – all three are in stable condition now.
Amazingly, the Delaware State Police Department had a “Bee Swarm Removal Plan” in store, which may have sounded silly before the accident, but it was extremely useful in this case, some fourteen years after its inception.
According to CBS Philly, the plan called for “rounding up the local beekeepers, who together with fire crews, strategically disperse the bee swarms”
Beekeeper Dave Feinberg told the news station, “They’re giving us a half hour to get all the hives we can off of the truck. There’s literally millions of bees down there”.
“Having traveled up from Florida, up here they’re probably thirsty, now they’re all disoriented and angry I’m sure,” said Feinberg who advised people to not spray or kill the bees before calling their local beekeepers association.
