Tire pressure sensors could get a whole lot smarter if Continental has its way. The German rubber giant has just announced that it’s working sensors that will be embedded into the tread in order to read its depth and alert the driver when it’s time for a new set.
These new sensors would constantly gather data on tread wear, deformation and rolling characteristics and with the use of clever software it would be transformed into usable information for the driver to understand.
The function will be integrated into the company’s upcoming eTIS (electronic Tire Information System, which will become available to customers in 2017.
The question is: will the system be reliable enough to free drivers of the task of checking the tread from time to time.
Soon, even a sea cucumber will be able to safely drive a modern car…
